 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
When i was ag GT they told me that there was a few tiller motors floating around with a electronic reverse system but they weren't putting it on for production mainly for safety reasons like hitting a log in reverse and yanking it out of your hand and keep going.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
I have no clue just what i was told, i may have understood it wrong but thats how I gathered it. And i can walk half way up my boat before my kill switch pops, done it enough to know. If it yanks to one side or the other it would have to be a pretty short kill lanyard to pull out just going to one side.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
There has been a few safety concerns with the electric rev on tillers. Also gatortail sales a lot more tillers then cc, so if there were gonna be issues didn't want it to be a mass problem.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
I'm no engineer or manufacturer, but I don't see how the hydraulic squeeze handle operates any differently than a momentary switch would in terms of safety. If you back into a stump and let go of the handle/switch, in both cases the reverse disengages and the motor is back in neutral.
Safety aside, perhaps there's a benefit as to drive component durability with the "gradual" engagement of the hydraulic caliper which allows for a little slippage rather than an instant 100% engagement of an electric clutch?

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
Just heard of another incident where the lower unit on a PD spun around while on plane. I'll take a fire any day over a lil fire.
I would LOL but it's not funny. It's kind of dangerous.

I was told by someone who has it that gator tail said they didn't won't to kill all the stupid people yet. :o

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
Can't you lock the lever in reverse on current models? How is that any different?

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
I don't understand why they won't put a contact switch and use a lever similar to what they have now for reverse instead if a toggle. If you're wide open in reverse and smoke a stump its back in neutral as soon as you let off instead of somebody fumbling around trying to get the toggle flipped.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
That's exactly what I've been saying. A good momentary switch would be an effective and reliable "dead-mans" kill-switch to disengage reverse should the operator lose his grip on the tiller. Steal one of the weatherproof pulse/momentary push button switches off of a pro drive and wire it to the electric reverse clutch and you'd be in business. There are certainly smarter folks than me designing these motors, but I'm curious why this isn't a viable way to get away from the hydraulic system while maintaining safety. I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I need to buy a new motor asap. I'm set up for a tiller right now, but I'm debating adding a console to my boat so I want my new motor to be ready for the conversion (with the new electric clutch) should I opt for the console.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
I think the reason why alot of people like the squeeze leaver on the tiller is because you can grab onto it with two hands while working the motor and have as much control as possible, especially while working mud. Reverseing in mud requires some effort in working the motor and definitely two hands.
I think with the momentary button you would only have control with one hand while the other is holding down the button so it would be nice and convenient for deep water reverse operation but prove to be pain in the ass if you ever had to work the motor hard in mud or something

I must not be understanding, then what would be the difference/point in switching? No point in fixing something thats not broken.

 Re: GTR Electric reverse??
The electric won't allow for holding light on the handle and melting the cover, overheating a rotor/brakes, etc. It's not a foolproof system as it stands right now, and can be improved upon. Hell, even the company you all speak so badly about figured out how to make a reverse work like an outboard. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and the hydraulic is proven to work, but not exactly be the best to some.

Let's face it some people just like antiquated junk and are willing to stick with it for the sake of brand name... Safety concerns in reverse...really...really?
