Alright guys getting ready to have a boat built this offseason. Wanting some input, on wether or not go with a CC or tiller. I hear guys with the CC say there never going back. I've personally never driven a CC. I'll will be fishing & hunting out of it. Just seems like the CC would just take up useable space? Any input would be great. Also if you have any pics of your CC setups would be awesome. Thanks

CC all the way....especially for fishing and if you taking any long trips. Hydraulic steering and a suicide knob are a must. Pics in the sig.

How many hunters do you want to hunt out of your boat. I fit 3 great and squeeze 4. Also it's nice to extra room to store 3 kayaks. I also camp out of our boat, with 2 cots. A CC would either make that tougher or possible. But it would be great to have hydraulic steering on 45 runs to favorite fishing / hunting grounds.

If you are worried about a CC taking up to much room, Go with a side console.

I didn't see my cc taking up any room and I had a 2048. I will be going back with a cc.

I have two other center console boats (non-mudboats), so I know the benefits. However, I stayed with a tiller on my mudboat mostly for simplicity. For my purposes, given hard use in often sub freezing conditions, less rigging is always better.

With that said, if I had lots of long runs to make (30-45 minutes is all I can tolerate on the tiller), or if the wife had any urge to operate the boat, I'd have a console and hydraulic steering.

A tiller handle is nice for the room and simplicity but either a side or center console is worth loosing the little bit of space for the comfort

Terraboat I usually run 3-4 ppl. I can defiantly see the upside to having a CC. Is there any real downside besides losing a little maneuverability with the motor?

Where are you sitting? On the deck or on the cc? I have the same boat and measured out area for the area for the cc. 3 guys was tight for me with a cc. I like some space between guns. Is 4 only possible on deck or hunting from drivers seat in a cc? We hunt out of a steep recline chair and low profile blind, The cc won't allow that. May a blind with sitting on high boat chairs and drivers seat...

My console was lower than my motor by about 6"-8".

If I did a cc, I would add 2 more feet to the boat, probably a 2048, maybe a 2054. I like the extra room to hunt and camp. Bottom line cc takes up room. That's the price for remote cc steering .

They only other negative is you lose some "touch" with the motor foot/prop. I can tell when I get in sand, gravel, weeds, or hard bottom when Im on a tiller. Sometimes I even turn around, but usually not.....

I hunt four out of my 1854 easily. As far as room for carrying things....camping trip; loaded down. 5 dozen weighted keel deeks, 2 flappers and one splasher, 120 quart ice chest with 60 pounds of ice/groceries, small 30 quart ice chest with drinks, tent, cot, propane bottle, sleeping bag, 2 guns, ammo, 30 lbs of firewood, cook gear and camping supplies in the big plastic tote, fishing poles, tackle box, bow and arrows, clothes, waders, extra 5 gallons of fuel to go with the 16 gallon built-in tank, trolling motor, 2 batteries....I don't think lack of space is an issue with a CC.

I noticed we have very similar boats and options. I love the camo hydro turbans also added a bunch of spud pole size holes to add slip in bow lights decks, blinds, etc.

Here's one from when I had an Avery Quick-Set for it. Easily fit four. One behind the console, one in front, one between the console and front deck and one sitting on the front deck...usually worked best when hunting off the starboard side. When we hunted off the port side, my son would sit on the front deck since he is left handed.

I don't think a tiller would give me any kind of "extra" advantage over the CC when it comes to rooting and getting in and out of the thick stuff with a bigger boat....especially with the addition of the suicide knob to the steering. I think enough people have seen my rig in action through some pretty nasty stuff to know that thing will hold its own. I'm quite content working that steering vs pushing and pulling on a tiller.

We have two tiller steer PD's for our camp. They're quite handy on small boats and very maneuverable. But, like I said...they're on small, narrow, lightweight boats. There may be some advantage to tiller on smaller, lighter boats. But, for a big rig...I'm all about that console.

I've hunted 4 a few times out of my 2048. Not too bad but I hate huntin in the boat anyway.

2048, sure no problem. Long boat with extra room for cc. I'm just waiting for Blue to pull out some pics of four guys wih guns hunting in a 18' with cc. If he does that, I may throw down the cash and add a cc.

I love hunting out of a boat since I like to move everyday. Grass is always greener just over there where those ducks just landed.....

Ha! I got one...only problem, three are standing on the front deck posing with their guns...I was taking the pic. But, we get it done.

Never going back to a tiller steer.

Offset (side) console. Same place as grab bar. Does not hurt my ability to hunt.

I can agree with cc guys that while hitting stumps it is much better with cc. I like the ability to feel the bottom with the tiller, but one out a hundred stumps hits the prop just right and jams the sit out of my arm. Makes me slow the f down.

I like the idea and pic of the side c, but still worried about it being in the shooting window of shooter 3 and especially shooter four who would be sitting on the left side of it. This concern would only be for low profile mode where your basically sitting on the floor facing right.

I would love to find a good hyd steering mount for either side mounted stick steer up front near the deck or just mount low straight on front deck, thus have advantages of hyd remote steering, but keeping my floor wide open.

I have an 1854 cc and could easily see your blind working on my boat with a few modifications. I cant argue that the guy behind the console would be limited to shooting right in front of himself but he does not need to be shooting across the other hunters any way.


I have been wanting to build a blind similar to yours for my rig. Do you have any pictures of the frame attached to your boat before burlap and camo shit? If so please share.

Sorry, I couldn't find any of my construction pics. Pretty simple frame and connections off you can weld. Devil is in the details, especially if you want it adjustable roof height, and angle, and then ability to lie flat for towing and boat driving.

I used same size pipe as spud pipe as my welded into boat frame as my connections. The blind slides into those holes, as does my bowfishing lights, rod holders, electric downriggers, etc.

Cc may prevent lie flat storage or driving, but roof can be put just above it for hunting.

Best to weld or braze (hts 2000) the frame. My early version was bolts, but the vibrate loose. I used to use dried grass as my cover, but someone pointed out my burlap sack matched my hunting area better then tan dead grass. So I swapped over to burlap. Burlap lady much longer and better to tow, plus easy to see thru it to watch ducks.

Best to put a higher attachment point on the roof to make a two stage "cam" to lift roof. I set it up to not need any trigger, releases, etc. Just bump the roof a little and it pops open. I use bungee cords to lift roof. I little experimenting to make it work.

Side console takes up very little space and gives you the ease of driving on long runs.
