 Handheld GPS
I think im going to break down and get me a hand held GPS to leave in the skiff. How many of you use them and what do you prefer. This is the first time I will have owned one so I have no clue what takes the cake and what dont. Im thinkin I want to get something in the $350 range. Just looking around they look like the picture quality and antenna reception is awesome but like I said I have never owned one so any input would be awesome!

 Re: Handheld GPS
I've got the Garmin 62S. I bought it as a bundle from Cabelas with North American maps pre-loaded and a 1 year subscription to bird's eye satellite view. I've never had problems connecting with satellites or losing the connection.
The 62S is all hard keys, no touch screen, which I prefer because it works with heavy gloves. It's easy to use and has already saved a hunt for me. Pea soup fog on the Mississippi river. We never could have gone out without it. I paid less than $300 for everything.

 Re: Handheld GPS
I keep seeing something about marine maps. Did you have to load those on it or did it come with them?

 Re: Handheld GPS
I got a Garmin 62S also and I love it. I use it alot in my boat and it's been pretty wet before and everything still works like the day I bout it. I would surely stick with a Garmin cause I find the Lowrance are not very user friendly, but that's just what I think. When I chose mine I went to Cabela's and turned on the ones I liked and if they were able to pick up satalites in a big metal warehouse then I figured in the woods/water would not be an issue. Just a lil secert I oreded mine on Walmart.com cause I would it was about $50 cheaper on there site as appose to all the local stores (academy, cableas, bass pro, walmart).

 Re: Handheld GPS
I see, Im not worried about all the depth and bottom detail but thank you for sure. I winded up going with a Garmin GPSMAP 64S. Looked at it at west marine and bought it off ebay for $45 cheaper than they had it. Free shipping and im not in a big rush so it was worth it to me.

 Re: Handheld GPS
Looks like a nice replacement for the 62S with some pretty cool added features. I think you'll be really happy with it.

 Re: Handheld GPS
I think I will. It looked to be a really nice unit when I messed with it at west marine so we will see.
