I am new to MMT and mud boats/motors in general. I have been around boats most of my life and love to fish in shallow water. I don't hunt as much but would like to have that option to do that out of the boat as well. My question is what are the pro's and con's of owning a mud boat. As well would it be better to buy used or have a new one built? I live down on the MS gulf coast and would really like to get one within the next few months. Any help would be appreciated.

If you can afford to buy new, then that's what you should do. Not saying you can't get a really good rig by purchasing a used one, but there are more issues with surface drives than with your typical outboard. That being said, new means warranty if you have problems early on, but you may have a considerable wait on your hands if you plan on ordering a rig soon (duck season's coming and builder's are typically backlogged this time of year).

If you decide on purchasing used, don't commit to buying anything without taking the rig out and putting it thru it's paces (all of them) and inspect the rig before and after you take it out. If you have never ran a MM, bring someone with you who has so they may give you some input.

Just my two cents....good luck with your decision.

Learn as much as you can about the motors and boats as much as possible before you buy. This way you will know what your buying and what you want before spending a lot of cash.

Don't forget about building your own! That's a good option for less cashs. Just buy the Hull and slap your home made motor on it

Thanks everyone for the info. The main reason I am wanting this is for shallow water fishing where my bass boat won't go ( mainly places I don't want to take it.) I would rather not have to worry about tides down in the marsh and possibly getting stuck somewhere. I've been doing some research and it seems like they work very well in small rivers and creeks as well. Hoping to make this my main fishing rig and possibly sell my bass boat (a little expensive for me to run right now.)

Do your research. Don't believe anything you read on here about speeds and only half of what you see on video.

If you go buy a rig anticipating speeds you read about on here, you're going to have at least $15,000 worth of buyer's remorse.

^x2 on the speed advise blue gave, 30mph is fast in this hobby.

if your looking to save a little coin on this boat. buy a used hull and then get a new motor.

if you are wanting to mainly fish with it, get the widest boat you can. i have a 1660 and is a great for sight fishing. super stable. if i had to do it all over again, id probably get an 18x60. the length will help with carrying a load. but if you arent going to be hauling a load, the 1660 is pretty darn fast. w a 35gdsd, my boat would run 30 when it was brand new w/ just me and 9 gallons of fuel.
