 Trailer set up
I'm In the process of getting everything ready to pick up my new hull next weekend, finally found a trailer for her that will need to be reset up for a mud hull, since I'm going to have to repurpose it thought it would see if there is a paticular way I should set everything up (like bunk material and placement, winch placement, etc). Also planning on gator gliding and I know that carpeted bike will rub that off? I've done this for my other boats but never for a mud hull so any advice is appreciated!

 Re: Trailer set up
Use #1 2x6's for your bunks and place them directly on the frame if possible. Don't use those brackets. That will put the boat lower on the trailer and let you launch and recover it in less water. Once I have to replace my bunks I plan on hitting them with a sander real quick, then putting a couple coats of GG on them. If you don't have extra left over from doing the hull and can't swing the extra to do the trailer, carpet will be ok in a pinch. It won't wear the GG nearly as fast as those plastic bunk covers will.
As far as the winch. Get one size bigger than what you'll need. Use an adjustable winch post so you can basically sit the boat on the bunks, get it where you want front to back, leave 2" or so of board sticking out past the transom, then cut them off at a 45 so the boat isn't hitting a corner trying to get on the trailer. Then put the front stop and winch where it needs to be. It shouldn't be in a bind when you load the boat. Other than that. Use a good radial tire, bearing buddies and LED lights are also nice for visibility...

 Re: Trailer set up
I used P/T 4x4's mounted directly to the frame with the polymer covers over them. That was before I found out about GG. I'll probly remove the polymer slides eventually and GG the 4x4's when I do my hull. Reason I went with the polymer was to put a barrier between the P/T'd lumber and the bottom of my boat. The chemicles are corrosive to aluminum.

 Re: Trailer set up
The way the runners are in our boats, it would make a lot more sense for the bracing on the trailer to run perpendicular to the boat. Nobody really does it that way, but the boat would be much better supported that way, and it wouldn't be so crucial to make sure you got the long runners on the trailer directly under the long runners on the boat to prevent the bottom from getting all dinged up. Can't tell you how many boats I've seen all jacked up in between the runners because of the way the trailer is set up...

 Re: Trailer set up
Is it a crimped or slick bottom?

 Re: Trailer set up
If you're going to spend the time welding beams, set it up so you can run the boards perpendicular to the boat...Then you don't have to worry about spacing and every runner on the boat will have support no matter how crooked the boat is on the trailer...

 Re: Trailer set up
Slick bottom 1854. I'm not opposed to that idea except I wouldn't want the boat to slide around on the trailer since the bottom is only 54in wide and inside of the fenders is 74in total. Guess I could just put a couple of guides on each side of the bottom to prevent it sliding left to right.

 Re: Trailer set up
Yea, you should still put side bunks... The only thing your changing is how the boat is supported, and it should be alot better to have support under every brace than support under only a couple. Especially when the support under only a couple doesn't have to be off much to damage the boat.

 Re: Trailer set up
Mine was kinda shaped like yours, but I was able to get 3 2x12's to lay flat without much effort. I was pretty happy with that much surface area laying long ways, but if I were going to weld extra supports to flatten everything out, no doubt I would lay them perpendicular to the boat. Lot less room for error.

 Re: Trailer set up
Looks decently well braced. Get rid of those rollers and take everything off that's above the outside frame rails. Get your bottom boards done and put the boat on, then build your side bunks to fit. This way, when you load the boat it will always sit in relatively the same spot. Id consider putting a piece of channel across the back if it were mine. The PVC guides could be shortened as well but that's personal preference. I hate those things sticking up lol. No reason you couldn't have the bottom of your boat below the tops of those fenders. You've gotta good start!!!
