If you don't need to do a lot of turning get a square chine.

Re: round chine vs square? go!!!
Have a 17x54 pd double tapered chine, foot of water I have to slow down to turn with 3 people. Speed wise my buddy had the same boat just older so it was the original square chine pd offered. Boat would pass me no problem but had way more trouble turning. I believe correct me if I'm wrong square has a shallower draft that round or tapered. Which made it seem like the jumping on plane and speed was a big difference. IMO square is the water to go just have to be careful to not let it get away from yah. That's my 2 cents.

You need to drive both. I've had both and I prefer round. Just handles better.

Re: round chine vs square? go!!!
I have a 35 gt on a 16x44 legend craft with Chined hull and it will turn but I want to upgrade to a bigger boat. Nothing wrong with it but want to pack a bigger load so was looking and that's why in asking. My cousin has a gt boat and it slides like crazy and can get you in trouble. We have about 1" of water and the rest mud for teal season and it takes him forever to turn it. To the point they have welded some angle on the bottom to help. I think tapered is going to be the way to go kind of an in between

I'm going through adjusting to the slide of a square chined boat right now. Not sure I'm all that crazy about it. Kinda rethinking my decision and have been casually looking for a used round chine hull recently.

Re: round chine vs square? go!!!
Square will haul more, jump on plane faster, and draft less water but.... will slide in the curve. You have to know when to let off the throttle and don't be a dumbass. Now in a curvy canal you won't be as fast because of the turn ability of the other, but at least for me, the square options out weighs the other.

I have a stepped chine similar to the GT Extreme. I really like this setup.

Re: round chine vs square? go!!!
I've had a round chine go devil, 2 square chine boats, and now an extreme gt hull. My favorite is the extreme, but mine is the older model with the crimp steps bigger than the new models. It turns really well and tracks good getting on the trailer and picking up decoys. I liked my round chine too but it didn't track well at slow speeds. The squares were definitely faster and if I was in a lot of more open water or marsh I wouldn't mind, but I run a lot of green timber during season so turning sharp is a big plus for me.
