Post These damned EPA fuel tanks
I got one with the boat this past spring and bought another a few months later. One swelled up where it wouldn't fit under my deck, the fitting split in the other one... Junk.

Anyway. I had a quote to have an aluminum tank built where I wanted it with a filler and all, price was reasonable given the fab work and all the hardware involved. I am just hesitant to go with aluminum due to the sweating. We've seen temp swings of 50deg over a couple days and widely varying humidity levels. The boat has a water trap, but I'd rather avoid introducing water to the fuel at all if I can help it.

-that being said... What are the options out there for a plastic tank that isn't an arm and a leg? I know there's the flat 12 or 14 gal tanks but I believe they would fall under the same EPA regs as the small tanks and probably end up doing the same thing I would assume. Has anybody used a plastic fuel cell from like a race car? I know Summit and Jegs sell different brands and a ton of different volumes and dimensions. I figure with a vent tube or vented cap and a pickup/siphon tube just about anything would work right? I'm really only looking for about 10gal, maybe 12

If you have an old tank you might get lucky and be able to use the cap from it with the vent in it. I know the first round of epa tanks you could swap caps. If you don't have a old cap you can drill a small hole in the inside of the cap to let it vent.

The last good old style tank I had I let go with my last boat I sold. I have an old 3 gal metal evinrude tank in the shed I could use I guess

I never had any problems with my metal tanks, and I'm in NE Texas, so we still get some pretty good temp swings. I didn't use a fuel/water separator, but I did put Stabil in the tank at every fill up. I currently have a 13 gallon moeller, and it has distorted quite a bit for some reason, and its vented properly. Just my .02

I have a metal 14 gal tank. I put a raycor filter on it and with the clear bowl you can see any water that goes through it. I drain off the water every once in a while. Never affected my motor

Quick fix for water in aluminum tank. Get a 1\4" primer bulb with a short piece of hose on each end. Them shove a piece of 1/4" piece of copper tubing in the intake side. Once this contraption is built shove the tubing in the lowest corner of the tank and pump any water out.

I did this in my old boat that had a leaky gas tank because i was too tight to buy another one. Worked wonders if i thought there was water in it.

Yeah, I've seen pics of his setup, it's nice. Basically an insulated aluminum tank. Problem is... I ain't payin that for a metal tank, covered I plastic so it doesn't sweat. I'll just buy a plastic tank so it doesn't sweat  (as much)

Meh, came with the boat. I knew it wasn't going to last long but I figured I'd get more than a year out of it. I don't think that expectation was unreasonable...

I'm digging on Summit right now. Looks like the circle track tanks would work fine.

I'll pull some measurements. I actually have 2" less than where the tank will actually sit. I've got a piece of angle on the floor at the back of my deck and the deck itself. I'd guess it's only about a 12-14" opening at most.

Is it vented both directions? The EPA compliant BS will vent to the inside, but not from the inside out.

New ones can be fixed real fast with a drill bit. Pop the little cap off the top of the cap and drill through center with 1/8" bit. Pop little cap back in place, basically drilling out the "check valve" so it will vent both ways.

You don't even have to drill a hole in the new caps to get them to vent. They are made in two pieces just pop them apart and remove the little white ball and plunger and snap the cap back together. This way it will not get water in the tank with a hole in the cap and it vents very well.

Easiest way to stop an aluminum tank from sweating is to always top off the tank and keep it full when storing the boat. The tank only sweats on the areas of bare metal void of fuel, if the tank is topped of you will not have any issues. That plus a good water seperator and your good to go. If you leave and aluminum tank sit through the summer half empty, you will get water in your fuel.

I fixed my swelling issue by doing what Will said. Easiest and cheapest fix or buy a non epa cap next

My new boat came with a tank that has a cap with a rubber button on top. Thought it vented out was wrong must have check valve to allow in...pure f king junk. In South Carolina we can swing 50+ as well. Same issue as SETx with gap under front deck and a pain in the [HORSE FACE] to add fuel please follow up if you find a good replacement

Will do. I will probably fix the one cap and look for a replacement pickup assembly for the other that's split, but eventually I'd like to get just one larger tank. I've still got one functioning 6gal tank which is fine 75% of the time. But there are days that I'll burn a tank and a half or more on long runs or checking out new areas etc. Part of the swelling issue is the tanks are damn near see-thru thin.
