24 hp longtail on 1548 roughneck speed?
I picked up a 1548 roughneck with a 24hp Honda mud buddy. With 2 guys in the boat it won't get on plane, and would guess it maxs out around 7-8 mph. I would think the boat should be at least planing with 2 people and gear, but this is my first mud motor so I'm not sure. Does this make sense, or should I be getting more?

Yes you should be getting more speed. Your prop is worn. Or your engine isn't getting enough Rpms. Need a tach on there, in order to know how many rpm. Maybe you dropped a cylinder some how

Re: 24 hp longtail on 1548 roughneck speed?
I had a 15 48 sea ark with float pods with a 24hp mud buddy honda. Prop was wore an 1.5" overall and still managed to get 15 with 2 people. I bought a new backwater prop and got 17 with 2 people and 21 to 22 by myself. It was either a 9x6 or 9x5 I believe. Measure your prop and see what it is.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. Any advice on where I can get a tach? Also, for the prop do I measure the diameter and compare it to what it should be to tell if it's worn?
Do the float pods add to the speed?
Thanks again.

Pods make more drag. You can get tacs on amazon, even the tiny tac brand. The tiny tac brand ones are expensive
It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

Yes, measure the diameter of the prop a 9" prop will be 9" .5" of wear on both sides it a good bit of performance lost.
The pods seemed to help me on my setup I had. No problem with the water being too turbulent. It did have a small manual jack plate on it so it did stick out 3 to 4" more. It definitely helped with the back end not squatting under a light load.
