 Lower Unit OIl leak
I just picked up my new prodigy/37 EFI HDR, I noticed an oil spot on the floor under the motor i did some looking around and it appears to be a leak in the lower left had side. This motor has been used one ( 1 hr) WTF? I suppose i need to take it into get it warrantied. Hopefully this is not a indication of how this motor will be. Well I am basically pissed. I have head conflicting stories about mud buddy and i suppose they are true.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
I don't think the lower unit on an hdr has oil in it man. Sure it's not coming from the big hunk of shit sitting on top of the frame?

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
The engine has oil. The belt housing does not. The prop shaft housing has grease, but has a seal at both ends.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
There is 2oz of 10 w 30 in the reverse clutch on an hdr according to the manual, when deltas shop had mine apart I looked inside and there was some oil in the belt housing. I didn't ask why and they seemed unconcerned so I left it alone. Nothing that leaked though

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
it appears to be leaking out about and inch or two above the oil droplet. Obviously not a serious leak but still no something you want to have on a new motor. Is oil is coming out, I am sure water is sitting inside.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
The o ring that goes between the shaft and belt housing might be on wrong, or maybe some oil put on the o ring to make sure it has a good seal?

I wiped it clean once and it reappeared,

^this , really that oil should be staying in there, the o ring may not be seated well. Is it a stock 37 or did they have it apart for mods?[/quote]

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
Drain it, remove shaft assembly from belt housing and check the o ring, probably pinched during installation

I don't know how far you live from Jasper but I would be up there having them fix my new motor and I would watch them to make sure everything is up to your standards.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
Rooster, it was quite a haul to pick it up, I don't blame prodigy by any means, all they did was spray it and hang it. but I am going to call and get his opinion on what the cause might be? It was some jackwaggon in Idaho with beer 30 on his mind ( can't blame him) that is to blame. There is a local mud buddy dealer around my parts if i have to take it in.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
I completely understand, I'm 3 hours from prodigy and as far as I know that's the closest dealer to me. Let us know what comes about after you get this figured out.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
I would call Chad for sure, then figure out whats causing the leak. I would tear it apart if I had to, these motors are extremely easy to work on, plus youll learn alot. Aint no jackwagon at a dealership touching anything of mine. But thats me.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
Ok, I talked to chad. He told be to level out the motor and pull the bottom drain of the lower unit, I didn't that and a little water with a little oily film came out? Probably oil from manufacturing. I did hose the motor down over weekend after I took it out so itmohe possible water got into the covered hole On the side of the motor. But what still has me puzzles is the water still was slowly leaking out. Are these a foam gasket between the housing or a silicone bead of caulk? If it was foam I can understand where it would eventually get saturated and drip, but couldn't imagine that with silicone. Either way I am happy that is not oil from the transmission. I guess what I need to go is get chad opinion and take it back out to see if water gets in again.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
Its a rubber gasket, thin like spaghetti, usually a light coat of RTV silicone on top of that gasket keeps it dry in there. It needs to be opened up and the seal be either seated or replaced, followed with a good RTV job.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
And proper torque will help out. I'm sure there has to be a bolt torque procedure/pattern for that housing. Get that info before you start crushing o-rings and yielding bolts or aluminum threads.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
I took the back housing of the motor, top and bottom and found where there water/oil was coming out the O rings had no bee seated right and was out of the groove and was smashed in between the two housing pieces. I re-seated the o rings and applied a bead of black Silicon on top the the O ring. I probably should have got a replacement but i figured i would give this a try first. I did call mud buddy yesterday and talked and they wanted me to look for oil dripping from the clutch assembly. It appeared to me like everything was fine, although there was just a few drops down at the bottom of the housing. hopefully i got it fixed but only time will tell.

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
Youll be fine. Truth be told with a good coat of silicone you could probably go without the o ring at all. As far as the oil it probably was from assembly, I hope so cause mine had some too

 Re: Lower Unit OIl leak
One concern I have is with the belt tension, I never adjusted anything and put it back together the same way so I am hoping it is all good and the same as it was before. I really don't know how it could have changed, without messing with the adjustment screws on the side.

Yes, I believe so, what is the proper procedure Doing it? The owners manual does not give to much information.
