 dual motors single prop
I'v been contemplating on building a mud motor for my small boat a long tail is my choice on the type. As far as hp more is better right? but is two better then 1? I'm looking at 2 HF 6.5 hp engine join together by a chain on a go cart type clutch on each motor and one sprocket in the center with a pillow block attaching the shaft.
Pros. More hp for less money useable clutches changeable gearing for more speed out of the motors
cons Slightly more weight more parts to brake
I would like to achieve the speed of a short tail but the abilities of a long tail.
Here is my questions to you all Have you ever seen anyone attempt this?
Attached my concept for the idea

Interesting concept, I've personally never seen anything like it. Best of luck with this build I'll be watching to see how it comes out!

 Re: dual motors single prop
Seems like it would be tough to keep both motors perfectly in sync. Good luck

I don't want to sound negative or rain on your parade...but I think the only reason to do this would be for the satisfaction of doing it and having something unique. I don't believe it would ever be as reliable as simply using a 14-18hp single engine and drive.
The more moving parts, the more problems. If you take it on though, it would definitely be a conversation piece!

 Re: dual motors single prop
You have a good idea for a clutch on each motor, that will eliminate any rpm differences. I would suggest belts over chain though.

 Re: dual motors single prop
Almost all Navy ships use two engines per shaft coupled through a reduction gear and in design aren't that much different than a long tail, just with inboard engines. With clutches, I see no reason why it wouldn't work and it should weigh less than using two longtail engine setups. Weight of a 20hp LT vs. a twin engined single shaft LT? Shouldn't be too much off. What I've noticed here lately is that there are a whole lot more performance parts for smaller engines than there are for larger HP engines.
