 Almost melted an optima
Anyone had this happen before? Cranking battery on my pro drive. On a long run back to the launch I noticed a bit of a burning smell. Got home and the connections on my battery terminals were just about gone where they were crimped, and could tell the battery got hot. Thought connections were the problem, clipped the ends off and crimped new ones on.
Last weekend, my buddy broke down in his bay boat about 8 miles from the launch. Knowing how bad being stuck in a boat is (spent the night in the marsh before, long story) I didn't hesitate to leave a good flounder bite to drag him back. Ran about half throttle the whole way back, and about halfway heard a hissing from the battery box. Immediately shut it down and could see it had gotten really hot again and blew a vent plug out. Swapped it with my trolling battery and carried on. Trolling battery never got even warm the 45 minutes or so I had left towing him.
I could see where the optima had been bouncing up and down inside the battery box, enough to flatten one of the aluminum tabs and beat up the bottom of the battery a little on one side.
Got the battery replaced no problem under warranty, new one is here today. I'm assuming the bad battery was damaged internally, but just to check and make sure it wasn't being horribly overcharged by the motor can I hook a multimeter up to the new one with motor running and see what voltage it's getting? I'm guessing it shouldn't be over about 13-14 volts with the rpms up?
I'd hate to burn up another battery, those optimas aren't cheap, and they'd probably ask more questions for warranty the second time around.

 Re: Almost melted an optima
Looks like I have a bad voltage regulator...getting 12.7v to the battery teeminals at idle, 18.5v at half throttle in neutral, seems way high to me. I'll see if I can find one locally, but if not hopefully I can one from pro drive or boat Dr quick enough to make a big fishing trip that's planned next week.

$143 + tax and shipping from pro drive if anyone is wondering. Ouch.
