Post 37 efi MudBuddy losing power
So... was running my boat at the coast today the wind picked up and we headed in otw back to the ramp it got sloppy blowing 20-30 and 2+ft on the sound. If that wasn’t bad enough the motor went from 3850 rpms to 1440? I’m pretty sure it dropped one cylinder and just lugged along at a crawl in that weather, not cool. We got within half a mile of the ramp and it kicked back in and ran like normal the last half mile. Any ideas? Of course now that it’s back running normal till next time.

Plug boot arcing to the head. Wrap the boots and a couple inches of the wire in electrical tape. Make sure your coils are screwed tight to the engine (though I doubt this was your issue, it's a good idea to check). Also check the black wires going to the back of the coils in case one of them was shorting out with all the bounching.

Thanks Russ, sounds too simple but I’ll do it, I hope you’re right.

Russ is spot on.

This happens here on the Great Salt Lake all the time when it gets windy. The saltwater spray gets on the plug wires, and is more conductive than freshwater.

A good marine, sealing heat shrink over the boot, and wire will solve the problem. Try to get the heat shrink all the way to the coil. This will also give you some extra wear protection where the wire comes through the plastic shroud.

I don't use the stock boots, I always change them out with NGK boots, never have that problem again.

Bad news today, the power loss persists. Spent the day yesterday on this, cleaned all the salt, dried everything well sat in the sun for several hours 93 degrees here yesterday. Inspected the wires, replaced the plugs heat shrinked the wires and wrapped in 3M electrical tape (belt & suspenders) dialectric grease in the boots. Went to the lake this morning ran great for probably 5-6 miles, stopped for a couple hours, cranked up and headed for the ramp went about half a mile started losing power just like I’d let off the throttle all the way down to idle, I let off the throttle idled for a minute accelerated back to plane and started sputtering back to idle. Did this routine all the way back to the ramp. ????

Haha funny you should bring that up... I should have mentioned earlier I just did all that, last month was fuel issues started at the tank with the EPA cap, I replaced all the filters and finally the lift pump. That resolved everything until this. Unless it’s related to the injection system, I’m thinking spark problems idk tho

I lost an injector last night due to a wire rubbed on the air damn. Limped back to the hill burning in on cylinder. I zeroed in on the #2 injector wiring plug. I'll hard wire it sometime this week and be done with that.
