Do I need to replace seals in my surface drive? I have attached a photo of the grease that came out of the drive shaft near the prop. I replaced the pressure lubricator and followed the instructions some of you helped me on. I shot grease in the proper zerk and the new pressure lubricator filled 1/3 of the way full. As the lubricator was filling up, I noticed grease coming out the stainless steel collet next to the prop. I stopped pumping the grease gun right then. The unit is an '07 so I bet the seals have never been replaced. Any feedback is appreciated. This is my first mud motor so the thought of replacing seals is somewhat intimidating for fear of f*cking something up. Any advice you have for that is also appreciated.

normal use at 250 hours - or - 3 years....

Also use of the correct Go Devil grease is advised - that sure
isn't GD grease coming out back there - LOL

At the time you change that real seal inspect the shaft for
signs of a groove forming which could lead to shaft failure and
replace the shaft is the groove is more than the thickness
of a thumbnail.... Believe they run about 100 bucks for both...

Ok. Good info. I wasn't aware go devil had their own grease. The manual says to get #1 or #2 marine grade waterproof grease. That blue sh*t is the marine grade at least. When I order seals, I will order the go devil variety. This particular motor was not run in salt water. Regardless, when I replace seals, I will inspect the shaft for wear. How much do the seals cost and how many are there to replace? Thanks

I am disappointed to find this problem. I was planning on taking this rig to the coast this weekend. Is this a terrible idea now that I know the seals aren't good? Or can I just keep it full of grease so the salt water cannot come into the drive shaft area? I will be stripping it down to replace the seals regardless in the next week or so. So, I would think I will be able to prevent any real issues at that point anyway. I paid a good chunk of cash for this rig so I do not want to do anything that could permanently damage it, yet I paid a good chunk of cash for this rig so I want to get out and use it as much as possible! Again, your help is appreciated thus far.

You push an entire tube of grease thru that GTR - what every 15 hours...

My GDSD has 200 hours and 2 years of hunting - toasted 4 props and have
only used half a tube of lube and ain't even changed my spark plugs....

Ops I forgot I changed a switch last week for my trim I wore the rubber boot off it still worked just a Lil preventive maintenance !!

You right gigs I did change a clutch it saved my motor from burning up!! Ok one clutch!!

What does a power head have to do with them they are all the same when it comes to that!! As got props I know people that smoke a prop a week !! I got a drum full of burnt props!!

150 hours in salt water. No grease leaks. Doing it after year 3 just cuz I can! And its cheap.

Giga first off I do everything on my motor my self !! I do all my maintenance to the tee so you saying I need people to take care of me nope I don't need anybody!! As for as mods Hoyt the only person that touches my motors!!

I ran the red Lucas grease that I bought at an autoparts store. It seemed to work good for me. The dealer I bought my GDSD from ran the red Honda grease. I'd buy a couple of tubes and pump out all ofthe old grease. After that, you may have to add from time to time.

When I ordered my GTR, I did not get my pom poms. Do you get them upon delivery? For the record; Not every GTR owner is a cheerleader.

I didn't have any issues with my GD, but I did need reverse. Tired of the damn douche bags at the local boat launch getting in the way.
