Post Sizing my new hull. Is narrow faster?
I have a 1540 with a 12 hp copperhead, but I will be upgrading soon. I hunt with 2 other guys, and my current rig goes 16 mph with that load. I want something that carries a load better and is faster. I'm looking at getting J to build me a hull. I will be running atleast a 35 sd, maybe a blackdeath 4500. What size would you choose? 1846? 1860? Something else??

Forgot to mention that we don't have that soupy mud in south Texas. Just shallow water with lots of logs. Blasting mud flats isnt this rigs purpose. I also fish the coast, so this rig has to do both.

1850 might not be a bad choice. kinda in the middle of what you said. i had a 1850 gatortrax with huntdeck mudbuddy 4000. it was ok needed more motor.

^^ that's beacuse gator traxx are heavy. I8 48 will be faster but an 1852 will handle a load better. So pick your poison. I have an 1848 nonc j

I scout and fish alone. I only have other people in the boat when I'm hunting. My main concern is speed when I'm solo, but I want it to be safe when it's loaded down. When the seasons over, I fish the rivers near town a couple times a week, so a slow boat would suck.

I have my duck hunting boat as stated above but I also have a poling skiff with a 25 merc. I want to sell both and upgrade to a badass mud motor/boat combo.

18 54 will suit you well. When I say slower I mean 1-2 mph. These boats with a stock 35 or 36 only run 27-31 mph with a good boat.

I have an 1848 and it screams when its just me, get three other guys in it and it slows way down....but think how often those other guys are acutally in it and how much fun it is to whip around those cypress trees doing 30+

Test driving is tough. I dont know of any guys in my area running custom hulls. Know of a few gator traxx, and ive driven them, but I'm looking at a custom boat. Im leaning towards an 18x48 so far

It all depends on what you haul and what type terrain you run ;)

1856 Phowler with that motor will carry that load in the mid 20s, add a forth guy and full gear and you will be 21-22 ish with the mods you are considering. Biggest issue is that the boat will draft less which will get it on plane quicker from a shallow start.
