Post PD lower unit won't come off???
Took it to the shop 2 weeks ago and they called this morning and said come get it they can't do anything. Dropped the 4 bolts and it won't budge. My sounds similar to the trashed lower unit post above, is there something they're missing or some tool I need to tell em to use to get it off? Bassboat had to have a tire torched off it yesterday cause it was stuck as well! I'm having hell for luck with boats right now!!!

Slew

If the motor is torn down to just the mid-section and the L/U and the 4 bolts were removed then it should just side right on out.

Do you have reverse? and can you still turn it side to side?

I would remove the tention knob on the side the mid section and give it
another try. I'd also have them remove the mid section grease plugs just in case there in to far, plus you'll be able to see whats moving and whats not.

if the 4 bolts holding it in are gone... there's nothing to hold it in. I'd grease it up really good first, then take out tension knob and grease fittings and turn it side to side and it should come out. if nothing else, take the reverse plate off and hit the spline and drive it out, with a block of wood in between so you won't damage it. I'm going down the interstate to Canton tomorrow, if you need some help, I could stop by. crews, 903.736.9270

If your saying they can't separate the power head from the LU/frame my money says the coupler that connects the drive shaft to the clutch is froze (rusted) to the drive shaft. I had to cut the coupler with a sawzall the first time I removed the LU. Properly applied anti sieze will allow the coupler to slide right off the shaft when the power head is unbolted and lifted up. If its froze you not going to be able to pull it apart and you can't get to the 4 allen screws to separate the coupler and clutch. Anti seize doesn't last forever and has to be reapplied every now and then. Thats why I say if you own a PD you should remove the LU every year as part of a complete maintenace routine. I anti siezed the crap out of the coupler/spline area last summer and when I pulled the LU this year it was dry and had a slight rust buildup. Over time it will freeze togther. Plus the old grease in the housing can get funky and it will not be pushed out when you pump new grease in. Only way to properly grease and apply anti sieze where needed is to pull the LU. Wait to long and see what you get. Same with a froze prop. Like LU lube being spun up to the bottom of the motor when a top seal goes out, water and moisture gets spun up into the coupler/spline area washing away grease and anti seize. Thats my theory anyway. Call PD for advise on how to proceed.

how did they get the 4 lower unit bolts out if they haven't already yanked the powerhead?

He didn't say LU bolts, just 4 bolts. Which could apply to both power head or LU. That's why I prefaced with what I did. Your assuming they had the power head off and in that case your previous post would be correct, release tension and it should fall through the frame as its just a hollow tube. He needs to give more detail as to how far they got in trying to rmove the LU.

don't waste your time taking it to Cutter's Equipment hoping they will get it off for you... been that route already, and they requested that I take the powerhead off before I bring it to them. call me if you need some help... I'd be more than happy to lend a hand in exchange for a goose hunt.

if it's da top side dat won't come off due to the spline coupler as Poker stated.... it will come off. Just douche real good with sum penetrating oil & let it set... then while lifting straight up on da top side & prying all around under da coupler it'll break loose.

Yeh, Peck told me to do it and I believe yall. But I pulled a Coastal and pried, beat and motherforked it like a dog and it still almost gave me a heart attack. As my luck goes it will always be the exception on my chit. :(

Picked the boat up Friday. Gonna try and get ahold of PD next week and maybe make a run for cracklins and quail eggs and see if I can get the motor fixed. If we try and tackle it here I'm gonna holler at you Crews!!!

Eh just leave the bolts loose and run it 'til it falls off. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Brian and another cat was hanging on prybars after about 2 cans of penetrating oil was skeeted in the housing and it didn't budge!

He cranked up da fire breathin hacksaw and cut the bolts holding the cluch out and got the motor off. I'm glad he had to work at it. I;d a been pissed if he got it off no sweat after it sat in Tyler for 2 weeks for nothing... :P

Took it for a spin this morning she purrs like a kitten, glad KP didn;t try too hard to sell me a 36! Too windy to fish and the cranking battery was dead. Didn;t wanna swap batteries every time I wanted to crank/troll so went for a ride and loaded it up. Off to Wally World to get a new battery and try and get my decoys together in the garage. Might get that done before teal season ends if I'm lucky...
