Post 2003 MB Longtail
I have a 27 HP Kawa longtail on a 648 War Eagle (short transom), it has been a great motor but has become painfully slow, I do not have a tach on it but am sure I am not generating enough RPM. Should I take it to a good small engine guy? and What should I tell them?

First post by the way.......... Go easy on me :D

Yes, very easy. It runs off internal battery, so you just wrap the one wire around one of your plug wires.

Ok, out of the water 4100RPM, New Prop and still.....Any weight at all in my boat and it will not go, not even close to on plane, 3 guys and I am plowing.

Could it be the shaft and bearings?

Also as a quickie . Remove oil filter and pour a little in a spray cam top. Then check for "twinkles" with a flashlight. I have seen a couple flat cams on todays oils. This would be worst case scenario.

Did the boat run fine and all of the sudden get sluggish or did you just buy the boat?

Ok I'm a retard, but I did not leave the tach on, I can but I didn't. I was so confident that I made an impact that I put it in my boat tool box. I went from 3100 RPM max, got it adjusted to 4100 and replaced the prop so I thought...... look out I am going to hit 20 like everyone talks about out of their longtail. My cavitation does not run at the surface (if I was empty and by myself it actually comes out of the water if I don't keep upward pressure), but I would be glad to adjust on it. The RPMs on the water are not even close to stressing the engine. I did notice at one point, I was running along and with no change I all of a sudden hit some sort of sweet spot and my RPMs picked up for a few hundred yards. (by the way I have been shooting duck out of it the whole season but I am limited to short distances, but I am at a crossroads here it's put out or swim for this Kawasaki)

I've had this boat since it was new in 03, it never ran over 16 mph but it had more power than it does now, this summer with my wife (skinny) and 2 toddlers it would not plain.

I can get more RPMs out of 15 inches of water like everyone else but as soon as it gets deep I get an immediate noticeable bogging down.

bend the end of the plate up to push the plate down, bend the end of the plate down to lift it up... Should be skimming about an inch or so under the surface at WOT

Do you really think the cavitation will make a difference? Is the 27 Kawasaki Mud Buddy the slowest longtail ever built? the Backwater INC guy said their 27 would push my War Eagle at 20? Do you believe it? Will I ever gain? Do you think the Super Longtail is the answer? or GD? This rig has been ridiculously effective, we can launch it and load it basically on bare dirt. it is small enough to navigate woods with ease. But if I can keep the advantage of the longtail with 20 MPH I would be much happier.

I have always felt that short tails lack the ability to climb over a bank or tree or log jam. Do you guys think there are things a longtail can do that a shorty won't?

I beleive the longtails can get u out of a bind when needed. I am a longtail guy. Hope this dosent start the whole long vs short battle. I believe long vs short advantages all depends on wher you are at. Shortys are def faster. Im always gettin whooped. But love my longtail

The way you hit a sweet spot all of a sudden sounds like a fuel issue. Filter/carb. Might have a gas hose breaking down internally and blocking the gas. When was the last time you had the carb cleaned or rebuilt?

Never? I did a amateur clean job a year or so ago while putting on a new fuel pump, Are you thinking a carb rebuild?

9x8 is alot of prop. I just put one sat and pulled it off today my hopped up 27 wouldnt pull it . This new prop is much fatter than a normal one. If this sounds like your new prop. Then u need to swap it. On a heavy boat i use 9x6 and 9x7 on a lighter boat

I have a 9x7 on my MB 27 Kohler LT.

You are running too much prop.

Go to a 9x7 and you'll be amazed of the difference.

We run a 9x6 on a 1648 riveted boat with a 29 Kawi and turn around 3800 in water. It sounds like you have way too much prop for a heavy boat. Put the tach back on and see what the in water RPM's are like was suggested. It should be turning around 3800 in water. If it is lower try a smaller prop. If you cannot get the RPM's up with even a smaller prop then you have a motor issue.
