My set up is a 420cc lifan longtail on a 14/42 boat at least I think that's the width or close to it. Now onto my problems first is prop sizes are 8×5 and 8.5×6 which do you recommend? Secondly if you installed a throttle lever how did you do it? I have tried so many things but I can't seem to get anything to give me a full range of throttle! Any advice is much appreciated!

Get a couple different cheap-o props and find out what you need and get that one in stainless.

First off, there are plenty of reliable longtail options besides Backwater. I've owned and used plenty of other longtails. I just don't think the cheap Thai kits are worth having. They are cheaply made and just can't handle the abuse that the other longtails can handle. I honestly think you'd be better off with a little outboard.

Secondly, I COMPLETELY understand the poor college kid situation. It's been less than a decade since I was in your shoes. I busted my ass and bought a riveted 1440 and ran an 8hp Mercury through hell.

Please take a little piece of knowledge from me that will apply to a lot more than just this mud motor situation. A lot of times people will want a certain item that costs let's say $1,000. They can't afford it so they buy another option that's costs maybe half of the money. So now you've only spent $500. Great, right? Well, more times than not, the answer is no. Sure you've paid half, but that's because you bought an inferior product that won't last. So now after a few months, maybe a year, you realize your half priced item is junk and you want to upgrade. Now you go out and buy the original item for $1,000. Now your total cost is $1,500 and you're realizing you should've just saved a little more money and bought the $1,000 item first. Spend the money on a quality iten the first time. Once again, this is coming from someone who has been there and done that.

Back to your original question, I'd call the people that I just handed over my hard earned money to and ask them what prop they recommend.

I have the 8.5" prop on my duro 16hp. It drags the rpms down right to 3460 or so. I hate to say it, but I wished I would have never spent the money on aluminum props. I'm also in college currently and I thought it would be cheaper to go through 5-6 aluminum ones to outweigh the cost of 1 steel. But I tell you what, I've put 4 hours on my long tail and I've gone through 1.5 props. And this is being easy on it and not going through shit. Save yourself the headache and just get a stainless one from the getgo

Makes sense I am going to try the props I have now and see which works better then get that one in stainless. Also has anyone removed the governor on their motor if so how did it effect it
