Post Aluminum Alloy Help
What kind of aluminum are most boat builders using? 5052 or 5086? Also if it is 5086, is it H116, H32, or H34? What holds up the best?

Thanks.

Post Re: Aluminum Alloy Help
This is what I found on go-devils website.

CONSTRUCTION: ALL ALUMINUM
HULL: 0.125" 5086 H116
SEATS, LIDS, DECKS: 0.100" 5052 H32
FLOOR, FLOAT CHAMBER: 0.063" 5052 H32
RUNNERS, GUNNELS: 0.125" 6063

Was planning on using 6063 T52 aluminum for the bracing, tubing, etc. Only thing I was unsure of was the floor. Looks like go devil uses 5086 H116. Will keep looking to see what others use.

From what I know, which ain't much, most builders use 5086. The stronger stuff is brittle. It tends to crack rather than bend.

I know this. While that 5052 .125 bottom may do well in the marsh it ain't worth a chit up here. My 3/16" has held up better than a 1/8" bottom but even it has its limits. My next hull will have a 1/4" 5086, 6 stringer bottom.

I see that if you disagree and show knowledge of a subject that is not inline with bundy you are called a phagg.

Have noticed that in several posts by him. Nice helpful approach to exchanging information with poster. NOT

Once again this is the kind of attitude that keeps this site from really helping people to make informed decisions.

By alienating those that want to help with differing views by calling them names and trying to discredit them with

personal attacks. Would be helpful to include support information as TXSHOCKWAVE did than just personally

attack. My opinion only. sorry for the jack.

I was under the impression that most of the guys making mudboat hulls use 5086.

Post Re: Aluminum Alloy Help
Having owned boats built out of both, my experience is a 5052 bottom hull is better. 5086 tends to crack over time wit the vibration of runnin a boat. It has happened to a boat I had dat was made out of 5086 if you dont believe me you can come look at da bottom of my father's boat wich is also made out of 5086. 5052 does tend to bend and dent easier than 5086 dis is what keeps it from crackin. When a boat is braced properly da dents won't be much of a problem wit 5052. However nuthin is indestructible when it comes to alluminum, so when your boat take a beatin to where sumthin has to give would you rather it crack or bend?

Im not here to measure d*cks with you guys, but just FYI, most of the boats Ricky built while at Aucoins Fabrication had 5052 bottoms. Is it more likely to hook? Perhaps. It will hold up to many years of use(NOT ABUSE). Its all personal preference...

In that case maybe you should consider a 9/16 bottom like brinklydogs.

There was no problem with the way the boat was built, the problem was the 1500-2000lbs you were carrying in an all 1/8th boat over stumps. You commented on the old MMT site about a week before you noticed the bottom about how much weight you were carrying and how impressed you were with it. Bottom line is with that much weight I dont see how you could exect the bottom to stay straight.

As I said before, I dont want to have a pissing match here, just saying that some people are sure hard on criticizing boat builders(including ricky) when the problem often lies in incorrect assumption that since its aluminum, its indestructable.

Oh, and Im Travis. According to Bundy, Im the shop d1ckhead.
