My GT and my buddy's PD performed the same in the stumps a few days ago. Was an area with all sunken logs and stumps.

Does just as good, but you gotta take the skeg off every now and then and lay it on the concrete and beat it back flat with a dead blow hammer.

Won't have to worry about taking it off to straighten it, the cast will probly grenade itself instead of bending

I find it hard to believe they would make a lower unit change that Takes a step backwards in reliability. There has to be a reason for it and I'm sure it will be some sort of improvement to the motor.

You still got the picture of the outboard prop stuck in one of those stumps with the whole prop shaft still attached? That was some funny shit!

Post Re: Toughest lower unit: GD, PD or GT?
I run a GDSD and i honestly have to say it is tough....the down fall is it will beat the S&** out of you when nailing stumps at high speed be ready to RODEO! no problems on the lower Unit the prop has 2 and 3/4 of blades cause the 3rd blade hit a colvert jumping a leavy and i still get 24 loaded down just vibrates bad... any ways i plan on getting a new prop and hitting more stumps in a few days. I have lots of freinds with MB and the cases (lower Unit Housing) crack constantly and are having to JB weld them up. I went with the Galvanized GDSD cant go wrong

Guys I have a dumb question for you. How in the hell and why in the hell are there so many cypress swamps where there are no longer (standing trees)? Were these places logged a long time ago or storms? Just a dumb and curious question?

Pete here is a little local history for you. It is a good read and you will understand why the cypress swamps are the way they are today.

Where I run, its because they damned up a river, to create a lake. All the trees then died, and broke at water level.

Good Lord indeed, Owen! That video is impressive to say the least... But that looks similar to the stuff we run in with my long tail. There's usually a lot of carp to shoot at underneath all that vegetation. LOL. We get our share of em, even with banging the prop into stumps and spooking them.

And that prop stuck in that stump with the prop shaft intact is a testimonial for why you need a mud motor to run in those stumps.

How many guys here running Gator tails have cracked a lower unit while running in places like owen's video?

Anyone else wanna comment on clutches wearing out/how often they might need to be replaced?

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge of mud motors with a dumbass northerner. LOL...

I wouldn't worry about the clutch.

The gdsd will perform just as well as your gdlong tail. The got the same basic construction. I would not want a clutch in such a area. The longer output shaft on the gdsd may come in handy if you get high centered. The gdsd handle can be set up to float, you may find that more comfortable than having a soild set up. later this summer I am going to play with a load leveler bag , to make a kind of power trim. I had one on my long tail, the sd will be easier to set up.

i run a35gdsd on a 1660 gd. run flooded oaks and cypress and creeks with lots of stumps/old logging rd pilings etc. I have put mine through hell and have had zero problems. Think about it, were talking about mud motors here, not porsche's. simple is better. fewer things to break. the manual trim is a complete non issue. easy to figure out. my skeg doesnt really have nic's in it and i have put it through hell. the other brands may be better in other area's, but its hard to argue any of them are tougher than a GD.
